What are Your Taco Party Essentials?

Planning a taco bar party? Youโ€™ll need a variety of items to create a fun (and delicious!) time with your guests. A well-stocked taco bar is the secret to a successful taco extravaganza.

Taco Ingredients

With so many ways to make tacos, from the tortillas to the fillings, toppings, and the sides, having the a good selection of  ingredients are at the top of the list for essentials.

  • Tortillas: Tortillas are the foundation of any taco bar. Offering a variety of tortillas can cater to everyone’s taste. Some of my go-tos are flour tortillas, soft corn tortillas, and lettuce wraps. You can also provide hard shells, soft tortillas for more variety.
  • Taco Fillings: The right proteins make your tacos hearty and satisfying. While most people think of ground beef tacos, you can also use grilled or shredded chicken, pulled pork or pork carnitastilapia tacos, or vegetarian options like black beans, tofu, or veggie crumbles.
  • Fresh Toppings: Toppings are a great way to get creative. You’ll want to serve a variety to let everyone customize their own tacos. Offer shredded cheddar, Monterey Jack, or cotija cheese, lettuce, diced tomatoes, fresh salsa or a simple pico de gallo. I like to include diced white or red onion, lime wedges, guacamole, hot sauce and sour cream to take the tacos to the next level. A few more options are chopped green onion, sliced black olives, chopped fresh cilantro or a hearty queso fresco dip.
  • Sides and Extras: No taco bar is complete without some delicious side dishes and extras. Mexican or cilantro lime rice, black or refried beans, and tortilla chips with salsa, queso, or bean dip are traditional sides. And check out this list of what to serve with tacos (besides rice and beans) for more amazing side dish ideas.
  • Beverages: Youโ€™ll need some refreshing drinks to go along with your tacos. Margaritas, (classic or flavored), a variety of soda options, and Agua Frescas are good choices. Or make a batch of these tequila sunrise jello shots for a fun adult beverage.

Serving Utensils and Station Setup

Setting up your taco bar so it’s easy to navigate is key.

  • Serving Utensils: Tongs for proteins, spoons for toppings, and ladles for sauces.
  • Food Station Setup: Arrange your items in a logical order โ€“ tortillas, proteins, toppings, sides, and then beverages. Use decorative labels for a festive touch if you have a lot of different options.

How to Keep Taco Meat Warm for a Party

Throwing a taco party is a blast, but keeping the taco meat warm and flavorful can be a challenge. Luckily, several methods can help you serve delicious, hot meats to your guests. Below are some effective ways to keep proteins and side dishes warm throughout your event.

Using Slow Cookers

slow cooker is an excellent choice for keeping taco fillings warm. They not only maintain a steady temperature but also help keep the meat moist and flavorful. This crockpot ground beef is my go-to recipe.

Chafing Dishes

Chafing dishes are ideal for buffet-style setups and can accommodate large quantities of meats and side dishes. l like to use them because they provide a consistent heat, making them perfect for parties that last several hours.

I like to use a disposable buffet set because it includes everything needed for serving (trays, lids, racks, fuel and serving utensils) and it makes clean-up a breeze.

  1. Set Up the Dish: Fill the bottom tray with hot water.
  2. Light the Fuel: Place the fuel canisters underneath and light them.
  3. Add the Meat: Put the cooked taco meat in the top tray.
  4. Cover: Use the lid to trap heat and moisture.

Oven Techniques

If you have multiple types of taco meat, the oven can be a lifesaver.

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to around 200ยฐF.
  2. Use Oven-Safe Dishes: Place the different types of taco meat in oven-safe serving dishes.
  3. Cover with Foil: Cover the dishes with aluminum foil to retain moisture.
  4. Rotate Occasionally: If using multiple racks, rotate the dishes occasionally to ensure even heating.

Keeping the taco meat warm in the oven is a convenient way to manage large quantities of different meats without hassle and you can pull pans out as you need to replenish the serving table.

Instant Pot Pressure Cookers

The Instant Pot is one of my favorite small appliances. They are incredibly versatile, allowing you to cook and keep the meat warm in the same pot, simplifying kitchen logistics during your party.

  1. Cook in the pressure cooker: You can use it to cook the meat.
  2. Use the ‘Keep Warm’ Setting: After cooking, switch to the ‘Keep Warm’ setting.
  3. Cover with Lid: Keep the lid on to maintain moisture and temperature.

Decorations Ideas

If this is a celebratory event, you’ll want to make sure you have some festive decorations. There are many fun ways to decorate, whether you want a couple touches or plan to go all out with the theme.

  • Matching tablecloths, festive plates, cups, napkins, and plasticware.
  • Pinatas – look for taco or fiesta-themed ones.
  • Centerpieces: like small plants and mini pinatas.
  • Paper fans and streamers

Entertainment Ideas

Keeping the party lively is important. Here are some entertainment ideas that fit the taco theme:

  • Taco Trivia: Create a fun trivia game with questions about Mexican cuisine and culture. Or try this family-friendly card game.
  • Best Taco Contest: Encourage guests to create their own taco combinations and vote on the best one.
  • Pinata: A classic and fun activity that’s great for both kids and adults.
  • Fiesta Music Playlist: Compile a playlist of upbeat Latin music to set the mood.
